In
1952, INEOS Phenol was founded under the name Phenolchemie as a
joint venture
of various industrial partners in Gladbeck, Germany, with the specific
purpose to manufacture phenol and acetone from cumene. Two years
later, production started with an annual capacity of 8,000 tons
of phenol.
Since
then, the company grew continuously and became the leading phenol
and acetone supplier in Europe. Starting in 1992, now under sole
ownership of the former Hüls AG,
then Phenolchemie, embarked on a program to internationalize. In
1993, a new plant was started in Antwerp, followed by the doubling
of its capacity in 1997. From this plant, located
in the Antwerp port with access to worldwide waterways, phenol and
acetone have since been shipped to destinations throughout the world.
Meanwhile INEOS Phenol grew into
the world’s largest phenol and acetone manufacturer. This
leading position is now supported
by our new facility in Mobile, Alabama, United States, where a new
grass-roots plant commenced production in April 2000. With this
plant, INEOS Phenol is now also
one of the largest domestic producers of phenol and acetone in North
America.
Today,
INEOS Phenol represents a group of companies with 600 employees
with numerous sales representations and a logistics infrastructure
around the world.
